Vermilion Cliffs National Monument (The Wave)

One of the northernmost spots in Arizona, flash floods carved this passage through petrified sand dunes, exposing bands of rock rich with iron. Due to its beauty, National Geographic even dubbed The Wave a “geological Mona Lisa.”Prospective visitors have to apply for a Coyote Buttes North permit (20 people are allowed in each day, with 10 permits issued online and 10 via a walk-in lottery) in order to visit the monument.

TIP: It does take some effort to acquire a permit, so be prepared.
